Retail Therapy

What is retail therapy?

Shopping to feel better

Retail therapy is when you go shopping for a quick mood boost to lift your spirits when you are feeling down. For example, when you've had a rough day at work, you might take a detour on your ride home to go to the mall to pick out a new pair of shoes or finally get that big-screen TV. Whether a small or big purchase, buying something can give a little dopamine rush, creating temporary relief or happiness.

Women are usually the most likely to turn to retail therapy when stressed out (men do it plenty, too), especially if they don't have many hobbies. They may just enjoy the pastime of browsing for things (possibly dreamscrolling), but it often involves buying something, typically clothes (CAS).

Like any form of "therapy," retail therapy works best in moderation. The joy of a new purchase (in person or online) can be fleeting, especially if shopping becomes a regular coping tool. And, of course, impulse buying can quickly drain the bank account. But when done mindfully, retail therapy can offer a small, enjoyable escape that brightens the day.

Example

this day has been the worst. i desperately need some retail therapy
