RTS

What does RTS stand for in gaming?

Real-time strategy

Gamers use RTS as shorthand for the "real-time strategy" genre. Typically, RTS games involve players constructing buildings and armies and battling against each other. However, instead of using turn-based gameplay, RTS games progress in real time. Thus, all players (and any AI opponents) act at the same time.

For this reason, multiplayer RTSes are typically played over a network (such as a LAN or the internet), with each player playing from their own computer. Some popular RTS games include:

  • Age of Empires
  • Command & Conquer
  • Northgard
  • Sins of a Solar Empire
  • StarCraft 2 (SC2)
