A thruple is a polyamorous relationship between three people. It is considered a "progressive" alternative to the more conventional two-person relationship.
The term was coined by Internet users and became popular in the mid-2010s as a way to refer to a consensual relationship between three committed people. Members of thruples may be all-male, all-female, or varied. They may also include married couples and a GF or BF.
A thruple is not the same as a "Threesome" (3sum), which refers to a sexual encounter between three people that does not include any commitment. The name comes from the combination of "Three" and "Couple" and may also be spelled as "Throuple."
