A touron is a tourist who does annoyingly stupid things, typically on accident. It is a derogatory term that locals in vacation spots where tourists frequent may utter.
Examples of touron behavior include uttering culturally offensive words (often ignorantly) in English or the locals' language. Or, a touron may make unintelligent decisions while caught up in the excitement of sightseeing, like walking up to a bison at Yellowstone National Park to get a better picture or endangering other people on a road when driving to a restaurant.
Origin of touron
The origins of the slang term "touron" are unclear, but it dates back to at least 1987 when it appeared in a September 20th article from The Washington Post that includes a definition of the word. The name comes from a combination "tourist" and "moron."
