Yapping

What does yapping mean?

Talking excessively

Yapping is when a person speaks incessantly, often about trivial matters. A yapper usually speaks for too long (and too loudly) without adding much value to the conversation, to the point where it becomes annoying to those around them.

Origin of Yapping

The slang term "yapping" has long-running origins that date back to the 1600s. The term comes from the sound small dogs make when they repetitively bark in a high-pitched way. People obviously saw this barking as noisy and irritating, sounding similar to people who constantly talk without pause.

While the term has been around for years, it gained a resurgence in popularity on social media (especially on TikTok) in 2023. In this context, people often use it in a slightly playful or informal tone to refer to their or someone else's propensity to talk a lot. For example, they may warn others about an incoming "yap session" or comment on an influencer's tutorial video, "too much yapping, get to the good stuff."
