Bitcoin Pizza Day is an annual celebration of the first time someone used Bitcoin to pay for an IRL item. It takes place on May 22 - the date that programmer Laszlo Hanyecz bought two pizzas for 10,000 Bitcoin in 2010.
Wait, really? Two pizzas for 10,000 Bitcoin? Isn't that insane?
It wasn't at the time. In 2010, Hanyecz's 10,000 Bitcoin were worth just $41. The forum user who bought Hanyecz his pizzas (from, of all places, Papa John's) paid $25 for them - meaning Hanyecz overpaid by only roughly $16.
Of course, Bitcoin has appreciated wildly over time. At the time of this writing, Hanyecz's 10,000 Bitcoin are worth roughly $544,184,000. The programmer, however, stands by his decision to trade Bitcoin for delicious pizza.
How do Bitcoin users celebrate Bitcoin Pizza Day?
Typically, by eating pizza. Bitcoin users also pay for the pizza with Bitcoin if they can - though Bitcoin's current transaction fees make the act of buying a pizza almost as expensive as the pizza itself.
