CTN is a quick way to tell others when messaging that you are too preoccupied to talk now. For example, you may be in a large lecture hall for a class where you can message but not verbally speak. Or, you may not be able to communicate at all since you are putting the kids to bed.
People may use the CTRN variation to emphasize that they cannot talk at this moment. Also, CTN has diminished in popularity since phones began giving users the option of a text auto-response to incoming phone calls. However, some still use CTN when texting and messaging online when unavailable.
