Facebook Friend

What does facebook friend mean?

A friend on Facebook, but most likely not in real life

A Facebook friend is a person you are friends with on Facebook, but not necessarily in real life. The term originated in the mid-2000s when Facebook grew in popularity and the term became important for distinguishing levels of friendship.

Facebook friends are typically friends of other friends, distant family members, people you met once years ago but don't keep in touch with anymore, and other acquaintances. You may have hundreds or thousands of Facebook friends, but only a dozen real friends that you would actually want to hang out with in real life.
