A function is another name for a party, typically larger than a casual get-together but usually not the size of a rager. It was popularized in the San Francisco Bay area to refer to parties in the hood, but the greater public commandeered it to describe any type of party.
While "function" has several meanings, the "party" definition gained notoriety due to various rappers, including Kendrick Lamar and Travis Scott. Like with a lot of slang, it is coined and popularized in the rap community, then spreads amongst teenagers.
Mostly young adults and teenagers use the term or abbreviate it as "func" when messaging online or in texts. Most parties can be called a "function," but alcohol is usually a key ingredient.
