An acronym for the disease known as "ALS," which stands for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; affects nerve cells in the brain and the spine and progressively degenerates victims' motor neurons until their death; named after Lou Gehrig, a HOF First Basemen for the New York Yankees who was afflicted with the disease.
