To make a person stumble over himself

A sports phrase that refers to when a player quickly moves in a different direction, which makes his opponent stumble over himself.

The term is commonly used in basketball when the ball handler makes a crossover dribble that sends the player guarding him falling to the ground. It comes from the clumsiness often experienced by a beginner when first using roller skates or ice skates and ends up falling.
