Rage Bait

What is rage bait?

Online content meant to provoke rage

Rage bait is similar to clickbait but focuses on eliciting user anger to increase clicks, traffic, revenue, etc. (part of rage farming). It may take various forms online, such as a provocative image or video, article headline, or social media post.

Online users from trolls to influencers to businesses may produce rage bait since it often produces an explosive and lucrative reaction. The bait is typically strategic since it gets supporters to interact but also attracts opponents who would previously dismiss that person's viewpoints.

For example, a political blogger on Twitter may post a tweet blaming a group of people for their country's problems. This triggers opponents of that viewpoint to reply to the tweet, creating a trending topic that ultimately benefits the original poster. Typically, those opponents would have scrolled past the tweet, but they can't resist the opportunity to put them in their place.
