Steve Harvey has also become known as a verb for when a host or presenter announces the wrong winner of a contest. The term comes from comedian Steve Harvey when he mistakenly announced the wrong winner in the Miss Universe pageant in December 2015.

At the end of the pageant, Harvey mistakenly declared that the winner was Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutiérrez but she actually was the first runner-up. After realizing his mistake a couple minutes later he announced that Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach was the real Miss Universe. He apologized to Gutiérrez and Wurtzbach in person and through a tweet.

A couple years later, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway pulled a Steve Harvey at the 89th Academy Awards on February 26, 2017. They were awarding the Oscar for Best Picture and were given the wrong envelope. They announced that "La La Land" had won when "Moonlight" had actually won. After the producers of "La La Land" had given their speeches it was announced that there was a mistake and chaos ensued. The "Moonlight" cast eventually came up to the stage to receive the award. Social media exploded with reactions to the epic fail with many people comparing it to Harvey's snafu.
