Anon is short for "anonymous," an adjective that denotes a person's identity is unknown. On forums and message boards, posters often post using screen names that render them anon (which is simultaneously one of the Internet's boons and frustrations). A person who is a member of the hacktivist collective Anonymous may also be referred to as an Anon.
In olden times, anon also meant "soon" or "shortly." Alas, anon's pr'r meaning hast fallen by the wayside, and 'tis no longer commonly used.
