When someone has a strong understanding of a sport, especially its players, history, strategies, and memorable moments, they have "ball knowledge." The term is particularly common in basketball and football discussions, where fans might praise someone for an insightful take by saying they "have ball knowledge" or "elite ball knowledge." People may also use it sarcastically to poke fun at someone who makes a questionable sports opinion, so having "zero ball knowledge" is definitely not a compliment.
The phrase developed organically among sports fans and became increasingly common on social media in the 2020s, particularly in basketball-focused online communities. In late 2024, the phrase received another boost when ESPN's College GameDay posted a viral clip describing actor Timothée Chalamet as having "elite ball knowledge."
By 2025, TikTok users were applying the phrase beyond sports to praise people who demonstrate impressive knowledge of movies, music, memes, dating, and other subjects. Today, sports fans and younger internet users often use it either sincerely or as an exaggerated joke.
