BIPOC

What does BIPOC stand for?

Black, Indigenous, People of Color

BIPOC stands for "Black, Indigenous, and People of Color" and is a more inclusive version of the "POC" (People of Color) acronym. It is often used online and in text messages in conversations relating to the experiences of people who have skin tones that differ from white Caucasians.

Instead of grouping the diverse ethnic groups into one big group, the acronym separates some of the groups to better recognize their unique identities and experiences. The acronym is ever-evolving, similarly to how the "LGBT" acronym has evolved over the years to be more inclusive of different sexual orientations.

The acronym was coined in 2018 but didn't become widely used until late-2019 and early-2020. It then surged in popularity online, especially on social media, in discussions about race during the civil unrest from the George Floyd murder in Minnesota on May 25, 2020.
