WOC is shorthand for women (or an individual woman) who identify as non-white (similar to POC but more specific to females of color). It gained popularity in the 2000s and 2010s through online communities, media, and pop culture, often in discussions about representation, equity, and empowerment among Black, Latina, Indigenous, Asian, and other women of diverse backgrounds.
People often use WOC when highlighting shared experiences related to race, gender, and cultural identity. You may see it in various contexts, from academic papers and activist spaces to casual conversations and social media hashtags like #SupportWOC or #WOCVoices. While WOC can be a helpful umbrella term, many women prefer to be identified by their specific racial or ethnic background when possible.
