Brain fart is a phrase that is employed when a normally intelligent person says or does something dumb. It comes from the temporariness of a fart and its similarity to a brief lapse of judgment.

The person who has the brain fart must be usually intelligent or else they aren't brain farts, that person is just not very bright. Brain fart may also appear as the BF acronym and is also similar to the AFB acronym.
