Cheddar

What does cheddar mean in baseball?

Good fastball

In baseball slang, "cheddar" describes a blazing fastball, typically one that's thrown with high velocity and command. If a pitcher is "throwing cheddar," it means they're lighting up the radar gun and overpowering hitters with serious heat.

The origin of the "cheddar" slang term is unclear. While no single player or announcer can be credited with inventing the term (although some attribute it to closer Dennis Eckersley), it evolved from the older cheese slang term, which also refers to a fastball, and players, announcers, and fans often shorten it to "ched."

The term became popular in the 2000s and 2010s in both amateur and professional baseball circles. You'll often hear it in dugouts, broadcasts, and social media when a pitcher is dialed in and blowing pitches past batters. For example, pitching coaches might tell a young hurler to "bring the cheddar," while fans hype up their team's flamethrower by posting clips with "#ched" or "#cheddar" during games.

Example

Did you see that pitch in the 8th? Dude brought straight cheddar at 98 mph
Right? That was filthy. Batter didn’t even flinch—just stood there watching the cheese blow by
He’s been dealing all season. That’s big-league ched, no doubt
