DACA

What does DACA stand for?

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals

DACA is an acronym for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy. It is a federal government program created by Barack Obama in 2012 to allow undocumented immigrant children in the USA to stay in the country.

To qualify for DACA, the undocumented immigrants had to have arrived in the USA before they were 16 (younger than 31 on June 15, 2012) and have lived in the USA continuously since June 2007. They also have to be free of any criminal history. If they check out, their deportation is deferred for two years with an opportunity to renew. They can also apply for a driver's license and work permit and enroll in college.

The acronym was prominently featured in the news five years later, in September 2017, when Donald Trump announced that he had plans to repeal the DACA program and deport the 787,580 immigrants enrolled (known as dreamers) back to their countries of origin.
