Demure

What does demure mean?

Modest, simple, and mindful

Demure describes someone, typically a woman, who appears modest, shy, or reserved, often in a way that is considered attractive or charming. People commonly use it to describe a person's behavior, demeanor, or style, suggesting they are understated, elegant, mindful of their surroundings, and not seeking attention.

You will likely see demure (or demurity) online, especially on social sites like TikTok and Instagram, but you may also hear it in IRL conversations. Additionally, while people often use demure seriously, they may also use it sarcastically to describe someone pretending to be modest or shy but actually being manipulative or coy.

Origin of demure

The slang term "demure" originated in August 2024 when TikToker Jools Lebron posted several videos that went viral. In the videos, she details how she looks and acts demure in the workplace. The videos gained millions of views, and other TikTokers began posting their own examples of demure to spread the trend.
