Dupe

What is a dupe on social media?

A cheaper stand-in product

A dupe is an inexpensive alternative to an expensive product. Typically, a dupe is a cheap-yet-effective stand-in for a name-brand product, such as makeup or clothing. For example, a Twitter user might brag about how they found a dupe of a name-brand lipstick for half the price.

In late 2022 and early 2023, TikTokers began stretching the term dupe to new extremes, using it to describe products that are "alternatives" in only the loosest sense of the word. For example, a TikToker might say a bus pass is a dupe of a Maserati, or that a Mario action figure is a dupe of a Nintendo Switch. In some of these videos, the word dupe is spelled "doop."

I got these Nike dupes for $20. A steal!
