FOD stands for "Friend of Dorothy," which is gay slang for a person who identifies as LGBTQ. It is primarily used by members of the LGBTQ community online or in text messages, but may also be used by heterosexuals to discreetly refer to a gay man.
The "friend of Dorothy" saying was created in the mid-1900s as a codename for LGBTQ members to identify each other and places where they could meet and be welcomed. The secrecy was necessary due to the persecution homosexuals experienced in the United States at the time.
Origins of the saying are disputed. Some argue that "Dorothy" refers to Dorothy Parker, who was a well-known poet and writer from New York who was friends with many gay men in the 1920s and 1930s. Others believe that "Dorothy" comes from the main character in The Wizard of Oz, who befriends outcasts, which is a feeling many LGBTQ members relate to. Also, Judy Garland, who played "Dorothy," was/is seen as an icon in the gay community.
