Gen Z shake is a characteristic of selfie videos made by Gen Zers where the camera shakes when they move it while it records. TikToker @homegirlzay created the term in January 2023, which soon went viral on social media.
The Gen Z shake typically occurs when the Gen Zer starts recording a video and then places the device down on a stable surface to record themselves without having to hold it, causing it to shake. Older generations would likely situate the recording device before beginning to record to reflect the recordings they grew up with captured by larger, expensive cameras on tripods. However, Gen Zers are more casual with their recordings, possibly because they grew up with more reliable, portable, and readily available technology and are more comfortable in front of a camera.
You will most likely see or hear the term on social sites where selfie videos are prevalent, such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube. It's meant to poke fun at Gen Zers' propensity to be less polished on camera, similar to how others tease millennials for the millennial pause.
