GEO
Generative Engine Optimization
Example
I rewrote my blog post on travel gear last night. I focused more on clear Q&A formatting
Smart. That’s peak GEO right there. You trying to get picked up by ChatGPT or Perplexity?
Exactly. If AI’s doing the recommending now, I’m optimizing for the bots that sound like people

GEO is the practice of crafting content specifically to perform well in AI-generated search results, like those produced by ChatGPT (CGPT), Google's SGE, and Perplexity. Just like SEO helped websites rank higher on Google, GEO is about tailoring prompts, answers, and web content so that generative AI tools will pull and present it more often and more favorably.
The term "GEO" started gaining traction in 2023–2024 among marketers, content creators, and tech-savvy Internet users as generative AI tools became more integrated into search and recommendation engines (it is unclear who coined it). As AI-generated search results have increased, writers, businesses, and digital strategists have adopted GEO practices, like writing clearly and conversationally and using FAQ-style formatting, to enhance their content strategies.
