NLI is when a user is not logged in or offline. For example, a person is NLI if they are not logged in to a workstation, social media or email account, or messaging app.
Instances when you might use NLI include when your co-worker is unavailable via your work messaging app or when your friend isn't available to chat because they are stuck in a meeting. Or, you might be trying to play a game online with one of your besties, but they went to bed early. Womp womp.
