Sitter

A "sitter" in soccer is a very easy scoring chance that a player should almost certainly convert into a goal. People often use it to describe a miss from close range, an open net, or a shot where the player has plenty of time and space but somehow fails to score. Fans, commentators, players, and coaches often use the term with a mix of disbelief and humor because a sitter is the type of opportunity that seems harder to miss than to finish.

The term comes from the idea of a chance "sitting" there waiting to be scored and has been part of British soccer vocabulary for many decades. While no single person is credited with coining it, "sitter" became widely used in British match commentary, newspapers, and fan discussions before spreading globally via television broadcasts and online soccer communities.
