What does TPS mean in gaming?

Third-person shooter

Gamers use TPS as shorthand for "third-person shooter." Third-person shooters are 3D action games in which players:

  • View the game's world from a position slightly above and behind the main character (a perspective known as third-person)
  • Shoot enemies with a gun or other projectile weapon

In contrast to first-person shooters (FPSes), TPSes allow players to see more of their player character (PC) and the game's world. Some popular TPSes include Resident Evil, Splatoon, and Fortnite Battle Royale.
