YPA

What does YPA stand for?

Yards per attempt

YPA is a football stat that refers to number of yards gained per attempt. It is commonly associated with the QB position to indicate the number of yards downfield a QB achieves.

The stat is calculated by dividing the number of yards completed through passing by the number of atts. YPA allows people to look at the efficiency of a QB. If a QB has a high number of completions compared to attempts it means the QB is accurate but if he has a low YPA then he is only attempting shorter, easier passes. If he is accurate and has a higher YPA, this means that he is attempting longer passes downfield (or his receivers have a lot of YAC yds), which is more impressive.
