Dreads

What hairstyle is dreads?

Dreadlocks

Dreads is an abbreviation for "dreadlocks," which is a rope-like hairstyle. Dreadlock variations have existed in various cultures for different reasons throughout history, including African and Rastafarian.

Depending on your natural hairstyle, there are different ways to attain and care for dreads. Unfortunately, because of their matted rope-like appearance, a stigma around dreads has arisen that the hairstyle is a sign of uncleanliness or laziness.

One instance of dreads drama occurred in 2015 when Giuliana Rancic criticized Zanedaya's choice to sport dreads on the Red Carpet, remarking that Zendaya looks like "she smells like patchouli oil or weed." The backlash was swift and severe, leading Rancic to apologize.
