Hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts sometimes refer to trail mix as GORP. Many claim this term is an acronym, though its exact origin and meaning are up for debate.
Most hikers who use the word GORP will tell you it stands for "good ol' raisins and peanuts" - a reference to two trail mix mainstays. However, others claim GORP stands for "granola, oats, raisins, peanuts," describing a fairly complete (and classic) trail mix.
Complicating both claims is the fact that gorp is a real word, which means "to eat greedily" (according to the Oxford English Dictionary). Thus, both acronymized versions of GORP may actually be backronyms (acronyms formed from an existing word).
