What does handicap mean?

Numerical score that represents a golfer's ability

A handicap in golf is the numerical representation of a golfer's ability. It allows players to play on more equal terms despite their differences in talent.

The handicap is used for calculating a net score from the amount of strokes a player takes during a competition. The handicap difference between players in match play is used for determining the amount of strokes the higher handicap player receives from the lower handicap player during their round. The better the player, the lower the handicap, whereas the higher the handicap, the worse the player. Handicaps are not used in professional golf and are generated for amateur golfers who pay regional and national association fees.
