Mic (pronounced "mike") is a common abbreviation for "microphone," the device that amplifies or records your voice. People may use mic in texts, online messages, and spoken conversations, typically in the context of music, gaming, and broadcasting.
For example, a sound technician may ask a speaker to lift the mic closer to their mouth while speaking, or a gamer may compliment another on his mic and headphones. Another example is you might have to help a co-worker unmute their mic during a Zoom call.
People also use mic in phrases like mic drop and mic up, and when referring to the person whose turn it is to speak in a group gathering (even if they don't have an actual microphone). For example, a book club leader may tell the person who is about to share, "You have the mic. We're all ears."
