MMS is a standard way to send messages that include multimedia content, such as images, videos, and audio clips, through mobile networks (while still supporting text). Unlike SMS, which is limited to text-only messages of up to 160 characters, MMS allows users to share richer content by attaching multimedia files to their messages.
Specifically, when you send an MMS, your message is first uploaded to a server, which then sends a notification to the recipient's phone, allowing them to download and view the content. This method makes MMS a convenient way to share more detailed information with others, directly through your phone.
Many mobile carriers support MMS, which works across different devices, including smartphones. Although many people now use internet-based messaging apps like WhatsApp or iMessage, MMS can still be useful in situations where you might not have access to data or Wi-Fi but still want to send multimedia content.
