NoPoo

What does NoPoo mean?

No shampoo

Those who have joined the NoPoo movement no longer use shampoo. You're likely to encounter this abbreviation, and the NoPooers who use it, on TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites.

Why did NoPoo start?

Long before NoPoo became a TT, some health- and environment-conscious consumers began questioning whether shampoo use was really necessary. After all, humans have been regularly shampooing their hair since only the 1970s. Additionally, synthetic shampoos contain plastics and chemicals that some believe:

  • Damage people's hair, instead of improving its condition
  • Are bad for the environment

While NoPooers (or no-pooers) have been around for decades (notably, the r/NoPoo subreddit was created in 2011), the movement went viral in 2022, thanks to a stream of NoPoo TikTok videos.

What do NoPooers use instead of shampoo?

Instead of using shampoo, NoPooers wash their hair in many different ways. For example, some use water only (WO), some use conditioner only (CO Washing), and some use a mix of dissolved baking soda followed by apple cider vinegar (ACV).
