PUP

What does PUP stand for in the National Football League?

Physically unable to perform

PUP is a sports acronym primarily used in the National Football League (NFL) to designate players who are injured and unable to participate at the start of training camp or the regular season. If a player is placed on the PUP list, they cannot practice or play for a specified period, but they remain part of the team and can return later in the season once cleared.

There are two versions of PUP, each with different rules about when players can return:

  1. The Active/PUP list - used in preseason
  2. The Reserve/PUP list - used during the season

The PUP designation has been in place for years as part of the [NFL’s|nfl] roster management system and is primarily used by coaches, team officials, and sports reporters. However, it has become common slang among fans and fantasy football players who track injury updates and player availability. For example, you’ll often hear things like, “He’s starting on PUP, but might be back by Week 6,” especially during training camp.

Example

Did you see that J.K. Dobbins is starting the season on PUP?
Yeah, brutal. I was thinking about drafting him in fantasy, too
Same. Now I’m rethinking my whole RB strategy
Let’s just hope it’s the short-term PUP and not a season-long situation
