Senator Karen

Who is Senator Karen?

Senator Elizabeth Warren

On Dec 14, 2021, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk referred to Senator Elizabeth Warren as "Senator Karen." He did so as the two exchanged barbs over Twitter, in response to Musk being named Time's Person of the Year for 2021.

Why Senator Karen?

No, Musk didn't simply forget or misspell Senator Warren's name. He used Karen in the sense that many millennials and social media users use it - to describe a woman who (at least allegedly) is acting spoiled or entitled.

What set Musk off?

Senator Warren pointed out that Time's Person of the Year doesn't pay any federal income tax. Rather than respond with a cogent argument about why his ability to not pay income tax makes sense, Musk a) linked to a Fox News article discussing Warren's Native American heritage, b) said Warren reminds "me of when I was a kid and my friend's angry Mom would just randomly yell at everyone for no reason," and c) called her Senator Karen.
