W/o is short for "without," which is a way to say that something is absent or not included. It is typically seen online, in emails, and in text messages.
The abbreviation is the opposite of "w/," which is the shorthand version of "with." The "o" is simply added to represent the "out" in "without."
Some instances where you may see "w/o" include when talking about how someone won't be joining you, how a person lacks something, or when batteries are not included with the new toy, which seems to always be the case.
