Wokespeak refers to words that display an awareness of social issues, such as racial injustice or cultural differences. It is a politically divisive term used mainly by conservatives to criticize the use of words such as "anti-racism" and "equity" by liberals ("the left") to further their political agenda.
The name comes from "woke," which made its way into the mainstream lexicon in the mid-2010s to refer to an individual's awareness of social issues. Conservatives, also known as "the right," view wokespeak as the same as "Newspeak," which is a fictional language used by the totalitarian "Oceania" state featured in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four.
To conservatives, wokespeak is part of a brainwashing endeavor to control people's thoughts and actions to serve their nefarious purposes. And they believe that if you don't conform to wokespeak, you will ultimately be canceled.
On the end of the spectrum, liberals view "wokeness" as a good thing because it means that you are "awake" to social injustices occurring around you. Examples of these injustices include the discrimination against members of the LGBTQ community or BIPOC individuals.
