Work It

What does work it mean?

Show off your stuff

Work it means "Show off your stuff," or "Strut your stuff." It's used to urge someone to show off their body, clothes, dance moves, or other skill in a way that highlights their physical traits and/or talents.

The origins of the phrase are somewhat unknown but it is believed to have come from "working girls" who used their bodies to make money and would sell their appearance by looking sexy. This practice was adopted by fashion models who would "work it" (their bodies) to sell clothes.

The phrase is often said aloud among a group of females ("Work it, girl!") when lifting each other up and empowering each other to be confident in their appearance. If a guy says it to a woman, he is probably homosexual or a close friend of the female, otherwise the woman may feel very awkward and respond negatively.

Example

What do you think of this dress?
Whooaaaa, work it, girl!

It's important to snap your fingers when saying it
