An almond mom is a mother who has an unhealthy obsession with keeping her daughter skinny. This label went viral among female TikTokers in the early 2020s, as they shared their experiences with their own almond moms.
Origin of almond mom
In a 2013 episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Yolanda Hadid's teenage daughter Gigi (who had been coming off a cleanse) called her mom and said she was "feeling really weak" and "had, like, half an almond." In response, Yolanda told her daughter to "have a couple of almonds and chew them really well."
In 2022, a clip of this interaction went viral on TikTok, as an example of how toxic some mothers' attitudes toward their daughters' eating habits can be. The clip was hashtagged #almondmom, and this label for overly-body-conscious mothers caught on, as TikTokers began discussing the negative effect that almond moms can have on their daughters.
