A cinnamon roll is a sweet, innocent person who deserves better than their current situation. This slang descriptor originated from a The Onion headline.
What is the origin of the slang term cinnamon roll?
On January 23, 2014, The Onion published a satirical article entitled Beautiful Cinnamon Roll Too Good For This World, Too Pure. The article described a cinnamon roll that was too perfect to exist in this fallen world.
Since then, netizens have taken to calling pure, perfect people cinnamon rolls. Cinnamon rolls are typically cute, kind, and slightly naive. Most cinnamon rolls have also undergone some kind of undeserved hardship, thrust upon them by the cruel hand of fate.
Because one must be (at least mostly) perfect to achieve cinnamon roll status, the term is most often used to describe fictional characters. IRL people are usually too disappointing to be true cinnamon rolls.
