Comment Ghosting

What is comment ghosting?

Removing a user's comments

Comment ghosting is when an online forum moderator or social site slyly censors a user's comments, making them less visible. The term plays off of ghosting, which is when a person suddenly disappears.

People who have their comments limited or removed typically break the terms established by the social platform or forum. They may share misinformation or hateful speech toward other users.

Social sites, such as Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, and Facebook, have been accused of comment ghosting. Frequently, the sites go after far-right and far-left extremists who commonly share conspiracy theories or hateful rhetoric towards people.

There are several names for comment ghosting. Alternatives include stealth banning, ghost banning, and shadowban.
