Crash Out

What does it mean to crash out?

To have a physical or mental breakdown

A sudden emotional or mental breakdown is the perfect example of a "crash out." It's when someone becomes so overwhelmed from exhaustion or stress that they react impulsively or irrationally, lose focus, or even immediately fall asleep. While some use it to describe a serious breakdown, others may use the term lightheartedly to exaggerate how frazzled, stressed, or drained they feel.

The phrase originated in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and gained early popularity through Black Twitter and artists like rapper YoungBoy Never Broke Again (NBA YoungBoy) in the mid-2010s. By 2024, "crash out" exploded on TikTok and other social media platforms, where Gen Zers and Gen Alpha often use it to describe breakdowns.

Example

u look completely wiped. rough day?
yeah, back-to-back meetings had me crash out halfway through lunch
i feel that. i just wanted to nap in the office too
Crashing out from school anxiety
