Hella

What does hella mean?

Very

Hella is an extreme way of saying "very." Kewl kids use this modifier when they have a hella intense opinion about something.

The origin of hella

Residents of San Francisco's Bay Area coined the term hella, likely in the 1970s. The word is possibly related to the phrases "hell of a" or "as hell" (the latter of which can be shortened to asl). It's very likely hella originated as part of AAVE and then spread throughout California, the U.S., and the world.

How to use hella

Most often, people use hella in place of very, such as in the sentence "That was a hella good sandwich." However, hella is quite flexible, and it can also swap in for the words:

  • Much ("That sandwich was hella worse than the last one.")
  • Totally ("I hella loaded that sandwich.")
  • A lot of ("I eat hella sandwiches each day.")
