Mama Bear

What is a mama bear?

An overprotective person

A mama bear is a person (typically a woman) acting especially protective over something or someone. The name comes from actual mother bears who ferociously defend against threats to their cubs.

You may see or hear mama bear used online, in person, or in messages. For example, you may tell your friend, "I found out Stacy had a sweet tooth when she went mama bear on me when I tried to eat some of her candy."

The Mama Bear Demographic

In 2023, "mama bear" became a political demographic term to refer to conservative mothers (like the "Moms for Liberty" group) concerned about the effects of "liberal" policies affecting the well-being of their kids. Republican Ron DeSantis is credited with popularizing the term (Republican candidates covet the demographic for votes) when discussing American moms fed up with "woke" policies. Other political demographic terms include soccer moms and NASCAR dads.
