Tl is an abbreviation for timeline, which refers to activity on Twitter much like the news feed on Facebook. It appears when you tap or click the home icon and displays a collection of tweets from users that you follow.
The timeline usually organizes tweets by the time that they were tweeted. However, tweets that you are most likely to care about most (from users you interact with a lot) will show up first. You can reply, RT, like, or DM a user from the timeline.
