Velcro is a golf term that refers to a slow green. It comes from the stickiness of velcro and how the ball "sticks" to the green.
The speed of the green refers to the distance a ball travels when hit at a controlled speed on the putting surface. The USGA uses a device called Stimpmeter to measure the ball roll distance of green speed. The environment, such as temperature, humidity, and soil type, and green management, such as mowing, irrigation, and aerating, are the main determiners of green speed.
