A vulture back is a football term for a running back that is put in on scoring opportunities to replace the starting running back. In many cases, the vulture back is usually bigger than the starting back, which makes it easier to score when close to the end zone.
Vulture backs are especially frustrating for fantasy football owners because they steal valuable TD points away from the back that they have started. Vulture backs also don't rush for many yards so they can't be started in place of the other back cause their only chance to gain points comes from goal line carries.
