WAH is a common shorthand for a job or occupation that a person can complete from home instead of a traditional office. For example, they can communicate and finish tasks effectively via phone lines or the Internet or create products with resources available at their home.
Various jobs, such as sewing, baking, and childcare, have been available via a home environment throughout the years. However, the WAH movement gained traction in the 21st century when the Internet connected digital productivity from the home to the office. Then, in 2020, WAH went global due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
WAH benefits and drawbacks
The WAH arrangement brings about a host of benefits for both employees and employers. For employees, it offers a flexible work schedule that promotes a healthier work-life balance, often leading to increased productivity and job satisfaction. For employers, it can result in a more motivated and efficient workforce. Additionally, remote work eliminates the need for commuting and the costs of providing a workspace, saving time and reducing stress, which can further enhance overall well-being and performance.
While the WAH arrangement has its advantages, it also presents significant challenges that employers and employees need to address for it to be effective and sustainable. One of the primary drawbacks is the potential for isolation, as the lack of social interactions in a traditional office environment can be a hurdle. Another challenge is maintaining a clear boundary between work and personal life. When the home becomes the workplace, it can be difficult to switch off from work mode, leading to burnout.
